AH15  Iceland From Below All year round

Highlights:
  • Lava tubes
  • Craters
  • Stalactites

Tour Description:

Available throughout the year, this tour takes you to unique sights of Iceland’s most spectacular lava tube caves and craters.

We will enter through narrow cave entrances and find they reveal extraordinary scenery of colors and lava formations. These beautiful, natural phenomena were created when the surface lava hardened and the fluid lava continued to flow in tubes underneath.

You will also see natural stalactites and many different rock formations making this nearly an indescribable experience. The caves become wide and high and in many places the floor is quite even. However, the trip can become rather difficult so we recommend you bring good walking shoes or hiking boots which are suitable for uneven lava surfaces.

Respect for nature and safety are our main concerns. There are no handrails, lights or any pre-installed tools in or around the caves.
We rely completely on the equipment we carry and that people respect our guidelines. This tour is suitable for all who can walk on uneven surfaces and at times, crawling on all fours to get through narrow places.

Please note:  This tour is not recommended for children under the age of 10.

Wow, what an unexpected treat! This tour was much more physically challenging that we anticipated. The caves are a short drive from Reykjavik. First, if you experience even an ounce of claustrophobia, do yourself and others a favor - don't go. If you go, I recommend bringing hard knee pads, as it will make this tour so much more enjoyable. You go into a pitch black tunnel, getting down some steep jagged wet rocks, then continue down the tunnel, at times half-crouched. There are absolutely no ropes or any other equipment in the tunnel and the only lights are the ones on the hard hats. Better yet, the guides don't lead the group at the head - they hang back, making the experience so much more raw and real. Without spoiling any surprises, let me just say that you should be prepared to shimmy through small crevices, crawl on all four and slide through tiny spaces through huge rocks on your back, legs first. The best 4 hours spent on our trip!

The tour was a lot of fun and the tour guide was very informative. I'd highly recommend this tour to someone who would want to know more about the geological aspect of Iceland.

Guide was excellent. Caves very interesting but a little more demanding than advertised. Overall very good.
