AH74  Whale Watching & Golden Circle Afternoon 1 Mar 2016 -
31 Oct 2016

Highlights:
  • Whale watching
  • Þingvellir National Park
  • Gullfoss waterfall
  • Geysir hot spring area

Tour Description:

Why not add a Golden Circle Afternoon tour to your Whale Watching tour for a full day of fun? This is a perfect combination of tours AH75 Whale Watching and AH11 Golden Circle Afternoon.

On this whale watching tour you can see the whales in their native environment which is an unforgettable experience.
The local bird life is diverse, including birds as the Puffin, Arctic Tern, Gannet and many varieties of Gull.

After the Whale Watching tour, passengers have time for lunch and a visit to the Whale Exhibition.
Passengers are picked up at the harbour at 12:30 for the Golden Circle Afternoon tour, which leaves from our bus terminal in Reykjavík at 13:00.

We start the afternoon tour by visiting Þingvellir National Park, where the Icelandic parliament Alþingi was established in the year 930 AD. Geologically it is remarkable and there you can see tectonic plate boundaries that form a breathtaking scenery.

We also visit the impressive Gullfoss waterfall and the spouting hot springs of Geysir and Strokkur.

Although this trip is a shortened version of our AH12 Golden Circle Classic tour, you will be visiting some of the very best historical sites and natural phenomena in the country. Before we return to Reykjavík we will pass Hveragerði greenhouse village.

We didn't see any whales, but they gave us the chance of a free tour in the following two years. A reason for going back to that amazing country.

Organization of the trip was well done. We were picked up at our guesthouse and at the end of the day could choose to be dropped off at our guesthouse or at Grayline's main office in Reykjavik city center. When we dropped off at the main office of Grayline in the morning, coordination went very well and we were brought to the company which would organize the whale watching tour (Elding). Unfortunately, the tour turned out to be bird watching such as Puffins, since no whales showed up that morning. Elding warned at the start of the tour that they could not guarantee anything ("this is not a zoo, this is nature"), but at the end of the tour they provided free vouchers to take another whale watching tour within two years. Since there was moderate wind and thus no quiet sea, it was highly recommended to take an anti sea sickness pill (provided for free). Even without whales, it was still a nice trip on the Faxa Bay with beautiful landscape views due to the changing weather (cloudy, rainy, sunny, wind). In the afternoon, again everything was communicated very well before we departed for the Golden Circle as well as during the trip. Our tour guide Silka was very friendly and would not only stick to telling something about the three highlights of the Golden Circle (parliament, waterfall and geisers), but introduced us to Icelandic culture, society, economy and history. During the trip, she told sagas about the discovery of Iceland, Greenland and Canada by the Vikings. Moreover, she would point at things we drove by, such as the church where the first Icelandic bishop had his seat or the greenhouses where Icelandic farmers grow their crops. In short, during the afternoon trip we were not only introduced to a number of Iceland's highlights but to Iceland's culture and history itself as well, which compensated for the disappointing disappearance of the whales during the morning and was beyond our expectations.

The bus was miserably hot! Surely it was broken. We would have liked a bit more time at the first stop since the is so much history to learn but I do understand the tour must take all the passangers' interests into consideration. Other than this it was a fun day with very nice employees. Thanks for a beautiful day!
