AH172  Black and Blue All year round

Highlights:
  • Gjábakkahellir cave
  • Snorkeling in the Silfra

Tour Description:

We start with the black as we explore the hidden world of the lava field under the Þingvellir national park. Walking in a cave and discovering the marvels that volcanic activity has created in the past is a trip that everyone can undertake. The Gjábakkahellir cave is a perfect example of an Icelandic lava tube and is situated in one of the most active volcano areas in the world. After the cave we dine on a packed lunch before moving on into the blue...

Snorkeling in Silfra is our second adventure. The Silfra fissure is one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets, an otherworldly scene that is world famous for its heavenly shades of blue. The crystal clear water in the deep fissure gives you a feeling of being weightless as you float down with the lazy current. The snorkeling is a relaxing but exotic trip in an environment most will only encounter in their dreams.

The Black & Blue is an amazing trip, a true journey to the borders of reality and dreams.

Trip difficulty 2 out of 5 possible.

We recommend hiking boots, warm and windproof clothing, gloves and warm undergarments (fleece / wool / thermal) and warm socks. Hiking boots and windproof jackets and pants can be rented from the tour operator.

Caving gear
Snorkeling gear

Online Booking:
Up to 24 hours prior to tour departure.

PLEASE NOTE:
Although you don´t need to "swim" while snorkeling, we recommend that you can. The reason for that is people that can´t swim tend to panic when they are in the water. You have to be comfortable with floating in water.

TIP
Are you wondering about the places we visit on this tour such as Silfra and Þingvellir National Park? You´ll find more information here at "Destinations in Iceland".

We really enjoyed this tour, it made for a great day and the guide was really nice. An advantage of this kind of tour I think is that the group is smaller and so it is a bit more social (and also less people to drop off at hotels on the way back). The first thing we did was the lava tubes, which was really interesting. This was followed by the snorkeling, which was amazing. It's worth pointing out that you don't actually feel cold at all in the water, except for your hands and face, which I didn't find to be a problem. You can even just keep your hands behind you out of the water, however I didn't as I was trying to take underwater photos. I would highly recommend this tour.

Overall very good experience, only that I expected lunch to be provided. The 'black' portion of the tour was amazing, the cave hiking was definitely our favorite part of the tour and brought out a renewed interest in both of us. The 'blue' part was simply astounding, however there was very little about the snorkeling experience that was comfortable. They are completely accurate about the amazing shades of crystal blue water, but they don't tell you in the description that it is a dry suit, not a wet suit. We understand the reason behind using the dry suit however it would have definitely changed our preparation for the trip if we had known that information. Breathtaking scenery, fun adventure, and some discomfort.

Thank you for your comments and review. Glad you enjoyed the tour. We can certainly update the descripton of the tour to let our participants know the difference between  wet suit vs. dry suit for snorkeling.

It was a fantastic experience.

It was really unusual experience that you could imagine to have in one day. It was really great tour. Only downside of this tour was that the waiting time before the tour start was too long. The other tours that I took were on time, but, apart from that, it was perfect tour and strongly recommend to anyone who would like to explore the world of earth and water in the same day! The tour information book said the tour would start with cave tour, but, my tour started with snorkelling first. the water was very cold but, thank to dry-suits, did not feel anything at all apart from of course, the face. It was beautiful view under the water, it was really clear water so that you feel as if you are flying in the sky. All the staff were very kind and helpful to put all the suits and etc. So any worries, fear to do snorkelling were gone immedately. While we are snorkelling, the staff were walking by the water so that felt really safe and secure. After Snorkeling, drinks and snack were provied and had good after feeling with everyone in the group to share the experience. Then to the 2nd adventure to the cave,. Going down the cave was another great experience and the guide was really great to explain so many details and stories. The time we spent there were just flying away as it was really joyful tour. Really glad that I did take the tour and really would like to thank to all the staff and guide to take the group to the joyful tour.
