Being one of the biggest travel weekends of the year (Verslunarmannahelgi or "commerce weekend"), a lot of Icelanders take advantage of the extra free day given on Monday and visit their cabin in the country-side, spend the days with their family or visit a festival. Many festivities are to be found all around the country, making Icelanders leave the city to enjoy their weekend elsewhere.
Organised for the first time in 1874, also this year thousands of people wil make their way to the Westman Islands to set up their tents in Herjólfsdalur valley and enjoy the many acts of the outdoor Þjóðhátíð festival. The four day festival traditionally ends on Sunday night with a big fireworks show and with singing, led by a member of Alþingi (the Icelandic parliament) and Vestmannaeyjar local Árni Johnsen.
Our tour to the Westman Islands will go ahead as planned, both on Saturday and Sunday so you might catch a glimpse of the festivities. There will however be no departure on Tuesday August 2 2011. More information about our tour AH36 Vestmannaeyjar - Pompei of the North can be found here.
